Mountain Water District was created by the merger of Pond Creek Water District, Marrowbone Water District and Shelby Valley Water District on July 1, 1986.

The Mountain Water District serves all of the unincorporated area of Pike County.

The District is a quasi governmental agency that is administrated by a five (5) member board of commissioners. Commissioners are appointed by the Pike County Judge Executive with approval of the Pike County Fiscal Court. Commissioners serve for a term of four (4) years. Terms are staggered to provide continuity on the Board.

The Board of Commissioners meets at the Mountain Water District office at 6332 Zebulon Highway at 4:00 PM on the last Thursday of each month.

Mountain Water District provides water service to approximately seventeen thousand (17,000) homes and businesses in Pike County and sewer service to more than twenty-two hundred (2,200) homes and businesses.

SYSTEM DESCRIPTION

Mountain Water District is comprised of over 1,000 miles of water main, approximately 190 miles of service line, approximately 17,000 meter installations, 26 master meters, 42 pressure regulator stations, 108 water storage tanks ranging in capacity from five thousand (5,000) gallons to one million (1,000,000) gallons with total storage capacity of 8,662,000 gallons, 137 booster pumping stations with a total pumping capacity of 13,221 gallons/minute ranging in size from 10 gallons/minute to 700 gallons/minute, and one (1) three million (3,000,000) gallon per day water treatment plant located on Harless Creek at Marrowbone. In addition, the district purchases water from the City of Pikeville and the City of Williamson..

The District distributes approximately one hundred and thirty to one hundred and forty million (130-140,000,000) gallons of water per month and approximately one billion, six hundred million (1,600,000,000) gallons annually!
